A purr (to purr, purring) is a sound made by many small wild, and house, cats. It is generally associated with a feline state of relaxation and/or content.
Unlike the way it was portrayed in the full-length Disney animated feature, The Lion King, large wild cats, such as lions, tigers and leopards, can not purr. Larger cats make more of a chuffing sound when content.
However, many furries roleplaying large cat species characters may take a bit artistic license and purr nonetheless. In some rodent and bird species, bruxing is the equivalent. Also, it has been said by owners[who?] of pet rabbits that the lapine version of the purr is for the rabbit to rub it's incisors softly against each other, making a purrish sound.[citation needed]
